Best Technical Solution – Ledo & Bulla ex-aequo
The 2014 Winners of the Best Technical Business Solution Award are Ledo & Bulla ex-aequo
Ledo’s King Prestige Gold – a new dimension of premium impulse ice cream. The ice cream is chocolate coated and then coated with gold powder, giving it a very exclusive appearance.
Bulla’s Cogeneration Plant increased Bulla’s competitive advantage over other ice cream manufacturers in Australia as Bulla is the only FMCG business that is able to operate generating 80% of its electricity, significantly reducing carbon footprint emissions and thus heavily reduces manufacturing costs. Bulla’s strategy for this project was to install two gas fired engines which would produce just over 2.8 megawatts of electricity. These would supply the majority of the electricity requirements for the factory, whilst utilizing the waste heat produced by the engines to generate steam via two Waste Heat Steam Generators. The Waste Heat Steam Generators, imported from the United States and specifically adapted to Australian standards for the project, would provide the factory with 1700kW of steam – enough for the majority of the plant’s day-to-day steam requirements and made for “free” using the hot exhaust gases from the generators.
